This morning was an experience I will always remember. I was blessed to have the opportunity to go with several women from a new Bible study I started going to at Heartland to meet and listen to Sonia tell us a little bit of her life story. I could have sat and listened to her all day. She was 13 going on 14 when she and her family of 5 were captured and taken to labor and concentration camps. She said of the 1,800 people from her small town that were captured she and her sister were two of the 200 survivors. Her father and brother were both shot, and her mother was with her in the camps until she was sent to the gas chamber. Sonia remembers watching through a peep hole her mother and another woman hugging each other as they were forced to walk to the showers. She showed us a scarf that her little sister was wearing that had belonged to her mother the day they were captured. It had somehow survived and is now her most treasured possession. We were all brought to tears as she told us only a few of the horrific things she experienced and saw. Sonia was so genuine and sweet and full of love and wisdom. She has written several poems that she wrote when she was in the camps and shared one with us. Sonia came to realize that God spared her life so she could go and tell others her experience. She has been speaking at schools and to groups of people to educate the younger generations and to not let her story be forgotten. I would encourage everyone if you ever get a chance to meet a Holocaust survivor to go and it will change your life!
